Why Divide by n − 1?

Let X1,…,XnX_1, \dots, X_n be i.i.d. with mean μ\mu and variance σ2\sigma^2, and let Xˉ=1n∑iXi\bar X = \frac1n\sum_i X_i.

Show that

S2=1n−1∑i=1n(Xi−Xˉ)2S^2 = \frac{1}{n-1}\sum_{i=1}^n (X_i - \bar X)^2

is an unbiased estimator of σ2\sigma^2, i.e. E[S2]=σ2\mathbb{E}[S^2] = \sigma^2.
